“Walk to Guru’s Glory.
Take back memories of a Kingdom.
For here in this Kingdom
Lies a benevolent King.”

–– a humble tribute on the route to Takstang monastery.

Paro – Thimphu – Punakha – Trongsa – Bumthang Valley – Phobjikha – Paro – Chele La Pass

Bhutan is the antidote to every city-dweller’s fatigue. Lush green valleys, golden rice fields and the company of the “happiest people in the world” introduced me to a culture so self-contained and seemingly satisfied with their way of life. I’m not sure whether it was the calm in the air or the wonders of nature that gave me new perspectives about life and such, but I am happy I took home more than images.

Photographed in April 2009.

Myanmar has a special place in my heart because it was here that I discovered my calling for documentary photography. While most Southeast Asian countries have developed their travel industries, a visit to Myanmar stands out as being one of the most authentic. To experience the real Myanmar, I encourage you to go beyond packaged itineraries and venture off the beaten track. My ongoing project on monastic education in Myanmar has given me the good fortune of meeting people from all over the country and learning how the country’s development impacts its people.

People make Places. And when there’s 1.13 billion of them, or one sixth of the world’s people in one country, I knew travelling to India would be nothing short of an amazing adventure. It was in Bangalore’s City Market that I wondered where in the world I was. In the middle of honking buses, overpowering flower scents and endless streams of humans and cows, I stood rooted to the ground, unable to do anything but absorb the life that unfolded in front of me. In the course of documenting this mix of colour, chaos and character, I found another kind of magic.

Bangalore – Mysore – Delhi – Bikaner – Jaisalmer – Jodhpur – Udaipur – Jaipur – Agra – Varanasi – Delhi

The Children of Mekong is a multimedia project that hopes to humanise water and sanitation issues in rural Asia. Although much has been written from news reports to research papers, the potential of documentary photography and journalism in helping to communicate such social matters is limitless when put together with a purpose.

Our journey, which covered floating communities in Cambodia, Vietnam’s rice fields and China’s mountain villages, showed us life in places where access to potable water and toilets remains a pipe dream.

This project was commissioned and kindly supported by Lien Aid, a Singapore-based non-governmental organization that seeks to build a firm foundation for human development by making safe water and sanitation accessible and affordable to poor communities in Asia.We hope that our project will inspire conversation about water and sanitation, and encourage interested parties to work with Lien Aid to further their work.

The Tropic Ventures Rainforest Enrichment & Sustainable Forestry Project is located on 1,000 acres of land in Patillas, Puerto Rico. The project’s mission is to research the economic use of rainforest land using methods that preserve forest ecology.

In August 2010, four Singaporeans who were awarded the HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Awards for their efforts in spreading environmental awareness were sent on an Earthwatch study trip in Puerto Rico. Among a wealth of experiences gained, they helped scientists in measuring tree bark, identifying anole lizards and building ethno-biological trails that contributed to the long-term study of forest in the area.

Photographed for HSBC in August 2010.
